I've been riding a lot and that's been a good thing.  It's kept me busy and also has made down time seem to go by faster.  I haven't taken as much pictures while out riding because I think I've gotten to the point where the sights around me have become mundane.  I have about 4 or 5 different routes that I'm willing to ride in the early mornings and they've all been ridden enough times where picture-worthy moments to stop don't come as often.  I also have my power meter in Japan now, so the focused training also prevents me from stopping.


On the last weekend of February, the opportunity arose to go for a hike.  We chose a hike in Tagawa that would, we hoped, give us a good view of a mountain that had been completely chopped off for either coal or cement purposes.

The drive there took us into deep Tagawa.  While not particularly far from civilization, the area did seem quite remote.  The hike was fairly straight forward.  There were many trails and we picked a couple that weren't part of the original plan.  But in the end, we got to the summit and eventually found our way back down to the car.
















As per usual, the blog ends with a post about cycling.  It's getting warmer in Fukuoka so that means the bugs start to come out.  Along the river are small bugs that litter the entire pathway.  It's impossible to avoid them so I had to learn the hard way to always wear glasses through these areas.  Otherwise I'll end up with bugs in my eye like the one below.  It's also a good idea to keep my mouth closed as well.


Hopefully as the weather gets even warmer, it will lead to even more adventures.

no fun when you're the only one

I hadn't realized how busy I've been since September.  During the summer months it's as if time stands still.  There's not much to do at work and the hot hot heat essentially forces me to stay indoors.  But I guess at some point I must have decided that I was tired of staying indoors.  I look back at my calendar and realize that I had done quite a bit of things in the months of September, October, and early November. myanmar day 4 and 5

May 3, 2016 Today was going to be an interesting day as we just had to kill time before our night bus to Bagan at 8:00pm.  We were a little uncertain about how to plan our day.  As Yangon's temperatures were uncomfortably over 100 F, we didn't want to be too sweaty and sticky on the bus.  We tried to be a bit aware of that when planning our day, but in the end, it wouldn't matter as standing outside for 10 seconds is enough to make you sweat. On this morning we didn't go to the gym.  Erik went for a walk along the train tracks and I stayed in packing my things.  It was our last day of breakfast at the hotel and the menu did shuffle a bit again, but it was more or less the same sort of food.  Our hotel offered a shuttle service to the Bogyoke Aung San Market (The market we intended to visit on the first day), so we utilized this service and began our day once again at 11:00am.  The shuttle was quick and before we knew it, we were at the market. iki island: an original blog title

Guidebooks will tell you that you can tour Iki Island in one day;  catch an early morning ferry to the island, then return back to Hakata later that evening.  Most of the guidebooks don't recommend that however.  In fact, they suggest spending at least one evening and one entire day. At first I thought two days seemed excessive.  The island is very small.  One entire loop of the island would result in only around 50km of riding depending on your route.  On a bike, that means only 2 hours of riding. I thought someday I'd plan a trip to Iki; arriving in the morning, circling the island, then returning home later that night. While I'm always up for quick, high-paced adventures, I wanted to enjoy the island. I suggested the idea of visiting the island to Seamus and Cash.  They agreed.
